so here it is, finally done my first real fanart for Avatar: the Last Airbender. my most recent discovery thanks to a few friends who recommended it to me^^ I have to admit, this series charmed me with its very first episode. everything is lovely about it - characters, story, concept, art and even voices. it really feels like watching an anime with dub XDDD
so I decided to make a little contribution to the series. the four main elements and their prime benders. set in seasonal order. spring and earth first, with Toph. she's just awesome, I can't even articulate how much I love her XDD summer and fire, with Zuko. he's such an awkward villain, you can't not like him autumn and air, with Aang. he's lovely, I adore his carefree nature and how he eventually grows attached to his duty winter and water, with Katara. she can kick ass too, and it's nice that she's the actual boss of the group
would have added Sokka too, because he's just PRECIOUS, but sadly, he's no bender:/
lineart done on paper with unipin fineliners backgrounds done in OpenCanvas characters and elements done in Photoshop
AtLA belongs to DiMartino and Konietzko as promised, full size available for details
I've loved your art for a while, but finding you also like this series makes me feel a bit vidicated. I've been sort of embarrassed being a fan of it and have kept my Avatar artwork to myself. You make me feel like it might be OK to polish some of my stuff up and post it.
Anyway - this piece is wonderful and I am going to happily favorite it. Too bad you couldn't fit Sokka in though - I think you would do a fantastic job on him too.
That is one of the nicest compliments I've ever gotten on my artwork ;_; Seriously, thank you very much for your most encouraging words. And you shouldn't be ashamed of what you draw. There are people older than us liking things like Pokemon and being able to produce the most fabulous works for it. So be proud, polish your works and show them to the world, there'll deffinitely be someone who appreciates it (especially considering that you're very talented! I've seen some of your works in FMA community on LJ, you have nothing to be ashamed of!)
Awwww, thank you! Haha yeah Sokka would be fun to draw, but sadly he's no bender and I had this idea about benders and seasons maybe some other time^^
*BLUSH* And your approval is one of the nicest compliments _I've_ ever gotten.
Agreed, the composition of this piece doesn't exactly lend itself to including Sokka, it's perfect just the way it is! Though, I've yet to look through your whole collection, I'd love to see how you handle the character -
Anime and graphic novels do have a bit of a stigma here in the US - the masses tend to look upon all of it as 'for kids' - and I suppose I was being oversensitive to that presumption. You have definitely encouraged me to clean up and finish the pieces I did - thank you so much for that. :*
thank you! sadly I don't have any other Avatar stuff here, someday I'll have to get to draw it again, the series is just awesome^^
hmmm I'd say that in US it's still a mild case of stigma. you after all have a profitable industry that produces both animation and comics. here in Poland, we don't have many schools that deal with graphics or animation, I don't know of any studios making cartoons. and anime has always been marked as 'cartoons of the satan', however ridiculous it sounds. but it's all prejudice. if this is what gives you joy and what you want to do, there's no need to hide
Oh dear! That does sound ridiculous! And you're right - it does give me a lot of joy so I will continue to draw it. Maybe some day I will get as good as you? LOL! It's something to aim for, though I can tell you've worked very long and hard to get where you are. Your efforts have definitely paid off.
you should aim much higher! I am not good example of an artist, you should find your own path and work on your way to become a pro^^ there's a very high chance of you getting to it, your works are already really good^^ and thank you for the compliment^^
Beautiful work Dzioo! I'm glad friends introduced you to ATLA, it's not to be missed. I love how you worked the Spring, Sumer, Fall, Winter motif in with all the elements. I think you're fire and water look fantastic. I hope further watching inspires some more fanart!
